Irã ataca base no Oceano Índico e acende alerta sobre capacidade de atingir cidades europeias
A instalação, compartilhada por Estados Unidos e Reino Unido e localizada entre a África e a Indonésia, foi alvo de dois mísseis balísticos na noite de sexta-feira (20). Um dos projéteis falhou durante o voo e o outro foi abatido pelo sistema de defesa americano, sem causar danos.
O episódio foi revelado pela imprensa americana e confirmado pelo governo britânico e pela agência de notícias iraniana Mehr, que classificou o ataque como "um passo significativo que demonstra que o alcance dos mísseis do Irã vai além do que o inimigo imaginava anteriormente".

A base de Diego Garcia fica a cerca de 4.000 km do território iraniano. Essa mesma distância, projetada em direção ao norte e ao oeste, colocaria dentro do raio de alcance capitais e grandes cidades europeias, entre elas Atenas (2.000 km), Roma (3.000 km), Berlim (3.000 km), Paris (3.800 km) e Londres (4.000 km).
O governo britânico, porém, procurou minimizar o alerta. A secretária de Relações Exteriores do Reino Unido, Yvette Cooper, condenou o ataque e o classificou como uma "ameaça iraniana imprudente", mas o parlamentar Steve Reed afirmou à BBC que não há nenhuma avaliação que indique que o Irã esteja tentando, ou seria capaz de atingir território europeu.
O Irã possui um dos maiores arsenais de mísseis do Oriente Médio, com projéteis de alto poder de fogo que, segundo especialistas, têm capacidade para carregar ogivas nucleares. O ataque a Diego Garcia, base que não desempenha papel central no conflito em curso entre EUA, Israel e Irã, já em sua quarta semana, foi interpretado como uma demonstração de força fora do teatro de operações habitual.
Israel aproveitou o episódio para reforçar seu discurso de que o programa de mísseis iraniano representa uma ameaça de alcance global. O Exército israelense afirmou em comunicado que havia alertado, durante a Guerra dos 12 Dias, em junho de 2025, sobre a intenção iraniana de desenvolver mísseis com esse alcance, algo que Teerã negou à época.
"O regime terrorista iraniano realizou ataques contra 12 países da região e está desenvolvendo uma capacidade que representa uma ameaça muito mais ampla", afirmou o comunicado israelense.
O primeiro-ministro Benjamin Netanyahu pediu neste domingo (22) que outros países se juntem aos Estados Unidos e a Israel no conflito.
