João de Orleans, o príncipe surfista: “Minha curiosidade sobre o mundo talvez venha de Pedro II”
Seu pai nasceu na França, durante o exílio da família imperial após a Proclamação da República. "Os militares tinham muito medo da popularidade de Pedro II," diz. De volta ao Brasil, seu pai seguiu carreira na Aeronáutica e adquiriu terras em Paraty. Mais tarde, João interrompeu os estudos para ajudar a família e tornou-se empresário local. "Comecei a pagar as dívidas de papai," diz.
Distante do imaginário tradicional da realeza, João construiu uma trajetória própria. Em 1976, tornou-se o primeiro brasileiro a surfar em Bali, na Indonésia. "E fui de cargueiro, porque na época era caro viajar," diz.
A fotografia, que começou como expressão pessoal, se consolidou ao longo do tempo — são mais de dez livros publicados. "A minha curiosidade de conhecer o mundo, as culturas, o respeito, isso talvez venha de Pedro II," diz.
Assim como seus familiares, João busca restaurar uma imagem positiva do Império. Dom Pedro II é referência central em sua vida. No livro Dom Pedro II por Dom Pedro II, ele e a autora e pesquisadora Chiara Ciodarot organizam escritos do último Imperador — com o objetivo de recuperar seus valores e visão de mundo.
