As vítimas trabalhavam em uma empresa cerealista de Ituporanga, conforme a Polícia Militar Rodoviária (PMRv). Lucia, de 41 anos, e Luciano, de 19 anos, eram mãe e filho e tinham nacionalidade argentina.

As vítimas estavam em um Fiat Uno que colidiu frontalmente com um caminhão bitrem, por volta das 6h55min, no km 265,350 da SC-110.

De acordo com a PMRv, o carro seguia no sentido Ituporanga–Vidal Ramos quando, ao fazer uma curva, invadiu a pista contrária e bateu de frente com o caminhão, que vinha no sentido oposto.

Com o impacto, todos os cinco ocupantes do automóvel morreram no local. As vítimas ficaram presas às ferragens e precisaram ser retiradas pelos bombeiros. Já o motorista do caminhão não sofreu ferimentos e teve resultado negativo para ingestão de álcool no teste do bafômetro.
