O Vaticano anunciou nesta terça-feira que não participará do "Conselho da Paz", organismo internacional lançado pelo presidente dos Estados Unidos, Donald Trump. A decisão foi confirmada pelo secretário de Estado da Santa Sé, cardeal Pietro Parolin.
O conselho foi inicialmente idealizado para supervisionar a trégua em Gaza e coordenar a reconstrução após a guerra entre Hamas e Israel. Com o passar dos meses, porém, sua proposta se ampliou para atuar na resolução de conflitos internacionais em geral, o que gerou preocupações sobre a possibilidade de Trump tentar criar um órgão que rivalize com as Nações Unidas.
Parolin afirmou que a Santa Sé não integrará a iniciativa e reforçou o papel da ONU na gestão de crises globais.
"Para nós, há algumas questões críticas que deveriam ser resolvidas", declarou o cardeal, sem detalhar quais seriam essas condições.
Ele destacou que, no âmbito internacional, cabe sobretudo às Nações Unidas administrar esse tipo de situação.
