O rover planetário Perseverance, da Nasa, passou a determinar sua própria localização na superfície de Marte sem depender de operadores na Terra.
A capacidade é resultado da implementação da tecnologia Mars Global Localization (Localização Global de Marte), desenvolvida pelo Laboratório de Propulsão a Jato (JPL).
O sistema utiliza um algoritmo que compara imagens panorâmicas captadas pelas câmeras de navegação do rover com mapas orbitais armazenados a bordo.
Executado em um processador de alto desempenho — originalmente usado para comunicação com o helicóptero Ingenuity — o cálculo leva cerca de dois minutos e alcança precisão aproximada de 25 centímetros. A tecnologia foi empregada em operações regulares pela primeira vez em 2 de fevereiro e novamente na última segunda-feira (16).
Até então, o Perseverance dependia principalmente da chamada odometria visual, método que estima a posição com base na análise de imagens do terreno ao longo dos deslocamentos.
Pequenos erros acumulados podiam gerar incertezas superiores a dezenas de metros, limitando trajetos autônomos e exigindo intervenções humanas.
Com a nova capacidade, o rover pode interromper o percurso, recalcular sua posição com maior exatidão e retomar a navegação. Segundo a Nasa, a atualização amplia o potencial de deslocamentos autônomos e deve aumentar a eficiência das operações no planeta vermelho.
