Segundo o Corpo de Bombeiros, 15 pessoas deixavam um bar flutuante e seguiam em direção a uma casa às margens do rio quando a embarcação bateu em um píer. Testemunhas relataram que a estrutura não tinha sinalização nem iluminação noturna.
Com o impacto, parte dos ocupantes foi arremessada e ficou presa quando a lancha virou.

Resgate e investigação
Equipes do Corpo de Bombeiros de cidades da região foram acionadas para o resgate. Ainda não há confirmação se as mortes foram causadas por afogamento ou por ferimentos provocados pela colisão. Três vítimas usavam colete salva-vidas.
Três sobreviventes foram encaminhados a uma unidade de saúde em Rifaina, com ferimentos leves, e já receberam alta.
De acordo com os bombeiros, o piloto da lancha não possuía habilitação para condução de embarcações, documento emitido pela Marinha.
