O suspeito tinha cerca de 20 anos e foi flagrado no portão norte da propriedade de Mar-a-Lago carregando o que parecia ser um fuzil e um galão de combustível, segundo a polícia.
Após confrontar o homem, os policiais dispararam vários tiros, segundo o porta-voz. Durante uma breve coletiva de imprensa, as autoridades forneceram alguns detalhes do confronto.
"Tudo o que dissemos foi: 'Largue o que está segurando', referindo-nos ao galão de gasolina e ao fuzil", declarou o xerife do condado de Palm Beach, Ric Bradshaw.
"Nesse momento, ele largou o galão de gasolina e ergueu o fuzil em posição de tiro", foi então que um xerife do condado de Palm Beach e agentes do Serviço Secreto "abriram fogo e neutralizaram a ameaça".
O suspeito "morreu no local", afirmou Bradshaw. Nenhum policial ficou ferido.
