A missão Artemis 2 enfrentou sucessivos adiamentos devido a desafios técnicos, mas, segundo Lori Glaze, diretora da agência espacial dos Estados Unidos, tanto o foguete quanto a equipe e os engenheiros já estão "prontos".
"Estamos a caminho de um lançamento em 1º de abril", afirmou Glaze, apontando que "ainda há trabalho" a ser realizado antes da decolagem.
Primeira missão tripulada à órbita lunar em mais de 50 anos
Esse será o primeiro voo de seres humanos ao redor da Lua desde o encerramento do antigo programa espacial norte-americano, em 1972.
Quatro tripulantes, sendo três dos Estados Unidos e um do Canadá, vão compor a equipe da Artemis 2, que orbitará o satélite sem realizar pouso, em um teste importante para futuras missões.
A tripulação, composta por Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch e Jeremy Hansen, será a primeira a ultrapassar a órbita terrestre desde a Apollo 17.
Durante a missão, os astronautas vão avaliar os sistemas e preparar o caminho para a Artemis 3, planejada para levar novamente norte-americanos à superfície lunar e criar uma presença contínua dos Estados Unidos no local.
O contexto dessa operação envolve a crescente disputa espacial com a China, já que ambos os países pretendem instalar bases lunares nos próximos anos.
