Uma porta-voz do Ministério Federal da Defesa confirmou a exigência e explicou que o objetivo da norma é manter um registro militar confiável e atualizado. "Para situações graves, é necessário saber quem está no exterior por um período mais longo", disse.

A autorização deve ser solicitada diretamente ao Centro de Recrutamento e Carreiras da Bundeswehr antes do embarque.

A restrição se aplica exclusivamente a homens com cidadania alemã. Mulheres com cidadania alemã seguem podendo servir nas Forças Armadas em caráter voluntário. Cidadãos estrangeiros residentes na Alemanha não são afetados pela medida.

O governo alemão pretende ampliar o efetivo da Bundeswehr dos atuais 184 mil soldados para entre 255 mil e 270 mil até 2035. Segundo as metas estabelecidas pela OTAN, a Alemanha precisaria de 460 mil soldados em caso de guerra.
