Dollar returns to R$5 and stock market falls amid Middle East tensions

4 sources · 24 Apr 2026

The dollar closed above R$5 and the Brazilian stock market fell on Thursday (23rd) due to increased tensions in the Middle East. Iran confirmed receiving its first revenues from fees charged on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital region for global oil transport, responsible for about 20% of the world's oil flow. Iran implemented transit fees for ships passing through the strait amid rising Middle East tensions and military threats between countries in the region.
