The attack comes amid a significant intensification of Ukrainian long-range strikes against Russian territory. According to French researcher Clement Molin, Ukraine launched about 1,000 drones into Russia in August 2024, 3,000 in July 2025, and 7,000 in March 2026. Similar attacks had already hit other Russian refineries — in September 2025, four people were killed and one was injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on refineries in Novokuybyshevsk, also in the Samara region.
