Israel and Lebanon agreed to extend their US-mediated ceasefire by 45 days after two rounds of negotiations in Washington on May 14-15, State Department spokesman Tommy Piggott announced. The extension allows for "additional progress" in the peace process between the two countries, which had already agreed to two previous extensions since April.

"In Washington, Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 45-day extension of their ceasefire after two "productive" days of talks, which will be followed by more negotiations June 2-3, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said."

The original ceasefire agreement was announced by Donald Trump on April 16, 2026, followed by a three-week extension on April 23. Prior to that, the countries were operating under a ceasefire negotiated in November 2024 by the United States and France, based on UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which establishes that the Lebanese government must prevent Hezbollah from conducting operations against Israel while Israel must not conduct offensive military operations against Lebanese targets.

"From 4am, November 27, 2024 forward, the Government of Lebanon will prevent Hezbollah and all other armed groups in the territory of Lebanon from carrying out any operations against Israel, and Israel will not carry out any offensive military operations against Lebanese targets, including civilian, military or other state targets, in the territory of Lebanon by land, air or sea."

The State Department described this week's talks as "highly productive" and announced that a new round of negotiations will take place on June 2-3 with military delegations. According to an official US statement, the two countries agreed to "a framework for negotiations aimed at advancing toward lasting peace" and establishing "genuine security along their shared border".

Despite successive ceasefire agreements, attacks continue. Lebanon's Health Ministry reported that Israeli airstrikes killed 12 people on May 13, including a woman and her two children, bringing the total Lebanese deaths since the current conflict began to 2,896. The United States acknowledged the "challenges posed by Hezbollah's continued attacks on Israel, without the consent or approval of the Lebanese government".
