Alex Saab — a Colombian businessman accused of being Nicolás Maduro's front man — was deported by Venezuela to the United States on Saturday (16), four months after being dismissed from his position as Industry Minister when Delcy Rodríguez assumed the interim presidency. The measure marks Saab's second deportation to the US in three years.

"Former Venezuelan industry minister Alex Saab, a close ally of deposed president Nicolas Maduro, was expelled to the United States on Saturday for a second time, Venezuelan officials said."

The deportation comes after Maduro's capture by the United States in January, in a military operation called "Absolute Resolve" that lasted 2 hours and 28 minutes. According to the Associated Press, more than 150 aircraft participated in the operation that destroyed Venezuelan air defenses before Delta Force operators landed at the presidential palace and captured Maduro and his wife at 2 a.m. on January 3.

"The deportation measure was adopted considering that the aforementioned Colombian citizen is involved in the commission of various crimes in the United States of America, as is public, well-known and reported," informed the Venezuelan immigration administration. Venezuela classifies the case as "deportation" instead of extradition, a measure prohibited by the Venezuelan Constitution.

Saab had already been extradited from Cape Verde in 2021 on money laundering charges related to the CLAP government program. He was released in December 2023 in an exchange that included 10 Americans imprisoned in Venezuela, establishing precedent for negotiations involving Maduro regime allies, according to the Associated Press.
