FIES students can renegotiate debts with up to 99% discount starting Wednesday

Students with debts to the Student Financing Fund (FIES) can renegotiate their contracts starting Wednesday (13) with discounts of up to 99% on the total debt amount. The measure was regulated by CG-FIES Resolution No. 66, of May 11, 2026, based on Provisional Measure No. 1,355, of May 4, 2026.

The maximum 99% discount is available for students registered in the Single Registry for Social Programs (CadÚnico) with debts overdue for more than 360 days. For non-CadÚnico registrants with delays over 360 days, the discount is up to 77%. Students with current contracts or delays of up to 90 days can get a 12% discount for cash payment.

FIES debts reached R$ 90 billion at the end of 2025, according to data from the 2027 Budget Guidelines Bill. Of this total, R$ 61 billion is related to debts overdue for more than a year. The current program offers more generous conditions than the 2022 renegotiation, when MP 1.090/2021 allowed discounts of up to 92% for CadÚnico beneficiaries and up to 86.5% for other debtors.
