The Senate approved on Tuesday (12) Provisional Measure 1327/25, which allows automatic renewal of driver's licenses for drivers registered in the National Positive Drivers Registry — the registry for drivers who have not committed point-eligible infractions in the last 12 months. The text goes to presidential approval.

The version approved by Congress changed the original proposal from the Lula government, maintaining mandatory physical and mental aptitude exams for all drivers. The joint committee rapporteur, Senator Renan Filho (MDB-AL), reached an agreement with the government and Senator Dr. Hiran (PP-RR) to reestablish the medical requirement, which had been waived in the initial version of the MP.

The measure establishes a single national price for medical exams, set by the National Traffic Secretariat at R$ 180, with annual updates by IPCA. Drivers are exempt from Detran renewal fees, except if they opt for the physical version of the license — they can choose only the digital CNH.

Automatic renewal does not apply to drivers aged 70 or older, nor to those with renewal periods reduced by medical recommendation. Drivers between 50 and 69 years old can use the benefit only once. The MP needed to be approved by May 19 to avoid losing validity.
